Unpacking the Principles of a Palliative Approach to Care: Including Designated Family or Caregivers in the Unit of Care

June 19, 2024, from 12–1:00 p.m. ET

Engaging family and caregivers in the palliative approach and in the care of a loved-one is essential for a holistic, patient-centered model of care. Involving families allows for shared decision-making, ensures that a person’s values, goals and wishes are understood, even when the patient may have lost the ability to do so themselves, and can optimize the continuity of care and communication among team members.

Family and caregivers, also need to be factored into the unit of care, where their well-being and ability to cope and manage their carer role is assessed and supported, avoiding the inevitable burnout, sizable stressors, and flood of emotions. Without the care of family and friends, high-quality home-based palliative care simply would not be possible, making their role one that should be recognized, valued and supported.

This CHCA palliative care ECHO learning session will identify key considerations for engaging caregivers and creating positive caregiving experiences for patients and families. The case study will highlight the caregiver experience of how they were engaged in care and the impact it had on their caregiving experience.
